My wife Jane and I had the pleasure of hosting the women’s basketball team from the University of Nevada at Reno at our house on Dec. 29, where my first cousin Jane Albright is the head coach.
The visit was a great chance to spend some time with my cousin, who grew up just outside of Burlington, N.C., and get to know her team of players and her basketball staff.
We had another special guest, Tommy Burleson, who was a childhood hero for me when he played at N.C. State. Tommy helped the Wolfpack win an NCAA title in 1974 and he’s 7-foot-2! I asked if he would speak to the team and he was nice enough to do so.
Tommy and I spoke to the team about using the platform they have – basketball – to be successful and to set the example for those who look up to them. We talked to them about getting around people that can help them reach their goals and I think they all gained from the visit.
We want these student-athletes to make a difference in the lives of other people as they go through life and I think they enjoyed the visit. The local newspaper came out and took some pictures to let people know the team and Coach Albright were in town to play Wake Forest.
It was just a neat day for me to hang out with my cousin, family and an ACC legend.
