March 21, 2016
On March 5, 2016, Jane and I had a plan. We told our mothers that we wanted to “officially” unveil our new plane, but we needed them both there at the same time so that they would see it at the same time. The guise was to unveil one of my dreams coming true, which was to own an aircraft. That dream had come true with the purchase of a King Air 200 we have dubbed Alliance Air.
I wanted to share this dream come true with some special people – including my mom, mother-in-law, my brother and some close relatives. In this case, it was extra special because my wife and I had conspired to surprise both our mothers with brand new cars. They had no idea what we had cooked up. Yes, we would show them the plane and all the new colors and the brand new interior and specs on the plane. We would dream about all the places we are going to fly one day soon.
Our mothers were absolutely surprised, bewildered and appreciative. Each car was decorated with a beautiful white bow, an arrangement of flowers and a sign with our mothers’ names on the windshield. This was an extra special touch that my wife dreamed up. Leading up to the unveiling, we had worked behind the scenes to store the new cars in our hangar at the Burlington airport. We parked the cars in front of the plane so that when the door opened, the surprise was not the plane, but really the cars! I was so excited and happy that Jane was able to give her mother such an incredible gift.
We got such a great deal on my mom’s Cadillac, I had to true up the value of her gift to make it fair to both mothers. This involved me handing my mom a stack of $100 bills that I counted out and piled in her hand one after another. This almost caused her to pass out as you can see in the video we put together to document this special occasion.
What a great way to invest in a Saturday afternoon! This day was shared with family and close friends. We were all smiles and it felt so good to be able to see the look on our mothers’ faces when they saw the shiny, new cars. We were all happy. It meant even more to have our family gathered around to watch it happen. We were laughing and dreaming about what is coming next because of The Alliance. It was a great reward because of all the things we work hard to accomplish daily. We keep trying, we keep striving to do more and we work doggedly to get better each day.
My wish is that this inspires others to continue working hard, working smart and to keep building relationships so that one day they can bless their family, friends, church, charities, children, parents in a similar manner. I also hope that in the process of doing that, a person is able to make some of their own personal dreams come true.
When you are able to give to others it feels good. It makes you happier, healthier, creates a bond or connection with people, shows a higher level of gratitude and – perhaps most importantly – it is contagious!
